Lately I find myself saying, “I just do as I’m told,” frequently. Life has certainly gotten easier ever since I decided to do so. In finding ease, I am finding contentment, too. I highly recommend it for everyone!
But who exactly is it who is telling me what to do?
By and large, it’s myself. You can call it Soul, Higher Self, Superego, Unconscious, Intuition, Subconscious…either way, the messages are coming in. The messages are loud and clear and in my own voice. They start as small nudges and grow from there, depending on the importance and magnitude of the message. I am often better at listening to the Big Things than the small ones.
On Monday, Wendy and I went on a little trip. We stopped at a store to buy index cards to write a few things down since the conversation was generating material we wanted to remember. Since Wendy’s dog was with us, they dropped me off at the store and I ran in by myself to get the cards. After finding the right aisle, I looked at my options and picked out two packages. And then the little voice chimed in, “Text Wendy and ask if she has a pen in the car.” After a moment’s thought I remembered that I didn’t have a pen on me. But Wendy had a purse and a car with all sorts of useful things. Surely she had a pen and sending a text or calling would be a waste of time. The little voice didn’t persist. I bought the cards and walked out to the car.
Can you guess what happened next? As soon as I opened the car door and got in, Wendy says, “I don’t have a pen. I hope you have one.”
I could only laugh at myself. My “waste of time” turned out to be not listening to that little voice in the first place! I had to walk back into the store and get a pen. There were some giggles at my expense on the other side. My Higher Self could only shrug. She tried to tell me, after all.
I’ve been obedient about all the Big Things. I traveled to Wendy this winter without really knowing why I was going because I was told to do just that. I’ve signed up for conferences and classes that I wasn’t sure I could afford only to quickly discover exactly what the purpose was and find the money for the cost. I have checked in on friends and acquaintances because I felt moved. I have avoided conversations that I was itching to have because I was told to not contribute. Every time in every way, I quickly discover exactly why I received the guidance and am thankful that I listen and follow through.
The messages are always there, big or small. My new Self-assigned homework is to listen and act, even if it seems like a little thing. It might not drastically change my day but it will continue to create ease and contentment.
Next time, I’ll just ask about the pen! 🙂
Want to boost the volume on your little voice?
You can definitely get in touch with your Higher Self and the messages it sends. Here are a few of my tips:
– Believe the messages when they come in! The fastest way to boost the volume is to start trusting the messages that you receive to be truthful and beneficial. Ask specifically to receive messages of that kind and start believing them.
– Open a dialogue. Start your day with an intention: “I will listen to the information that I receive today. I am grateful that my Higher Self communicates with me.”
– Ask questions. If you feel stuck or confused, ask questions. You might be surprised at the answers that come in. “What should I understand about this situation? About this person? What do I need to see? What am I supposed to take from this?”
– Meditate. I often say that prayer is when I talk to God and meditation is when I listen. Regardless of your personal beliefs or faith, meditation is beneficial in many ways. In this case, meditation tunes the radio to a frequency where information will come in. It can be as simple as closing your eyes for a few minutes during the day and focusing on your breath. Once you feel centered, ask to be shown what you need to see.
What do you do to create a dialogue with your Self? When have you listened…and when do you wish you had?
